What the Customers Have to Say!
For Jerry and Darlene, the staff and the lunch time crowd.
Deli and Market, By the Numbers
Hungry? Go stand among the firemen,
Students, nurses in blue-green scrubs,
Office clerks, professors of literature,
scientists from the Hubble.
Take a number.
You’re at the hub of the sandwich universe,
and 57 is a powerhouse,
So, while you wait, catch up on the neighborhood.
What are you planting this spring?
How about those Jays, them O’s?
58’s an Italian cold-cut with everything.
You’re here, so what else?
French bread, asparagus,
Goat cheese, olive spread?
59’s a pastrami and Swiss, cold. 60?
60? Hey, egg salad. Turn off that cell phone.
Outside the meter maids hunt and prowl,
But what do you care? You’ve walked
And 61’s your meatball. Go home
And eat. Forgot something? O no,
The light bulbs!
Turn around, head on back.
78’s a Reuben in short sleeves.

My family hails from the Charles Village neighborhood and after many years of culinary travels I returned home to the neighborhood of my birth. Charles Village has a marvelous sense of history and tradition, and one of the most important foundations of this urban village is Eddies Market Charles Village. In my book Eddies is the way to shop and what a good market should be - an amazing variety of quality products, all within a manageable space, and a warm feeling of old-fashioned hospitality. I love cooking, and at Eddies Market I can get everything needed for a well-stocked pantry and well equipped home. I strive to keep my money in the local community and by shopping at this great independent market I can have both good food and a good social conscience.

“I moved to Baltimore in 1997. Living in Charles Village and working downtown was great. My favorite part of the day was my morning stop at Eddie’s for a cup of their Special Blend to sip while sitting at the bus stop. The only downside was that once I got downtown I couldn’t get a refill of the same quality or price!
I still live in the City, but now I commute to Howard County for work. I also still make that daily stop at Eddie’s. The difference is that now I have to park my truck and pop a quarter in the meter if I get there after 8:00. It’s worth it though! Eddie’s Special Blend is bold and flavorful without being pretentious and expensive. It really is the best coffee to go, for the best price in Baltimore. The friendly atmosphere and always pleasant people keep me coming back again and again. It’s just a great way to start my day, and if I’m lucky I get to hear Angie sing a few bars of whatever is on the radio too!

“The relationship we have with Jerry and the people at Eddie’s Market is one we take great pride in. The service he and his staff provide is second to none and our relationship has grown from a professional one to a personal one. We have no bigger fans than Jerry and his staff and our student-athletes enjoy the camaraderie and support they receive from the local business community in general and Eddie’s Market in particular.”

“The closest thing to the quality food store that Bolton Hill seeks is Eddies in Charles Village!
Not quite walking distance but still only “around the corner,” and Eddie’s will deliver!
I buy from the Farmer’s Market and get everything else at Eddie’s. The best and lowest priced coffees, “never fail” ground beef, a real deli counter, and quality breads.
Best of all, absolutely no waiting at the checkout!”

“Since I work for Hopkins, first and foremost I appreciate the convenience of Eddie’s Market to the Homewood campus. But I especially enjoy the ability to get a nice, healthy lunch at Eddie’s salad bar. The veggies are fresh, there’s lots of variety to choose from, and whenever you have a special request, the staff is happy to comply. There’s also lots of dressings options, including real balsamic vinegar. Eddie’s salad bar is one of Charles Village’s best kept secrets!”

“Eddie’s means freedom to me, as I am able to walk just down the street and always find what I need to eat and drink. [Very handy when dinner is almost on the table and I’ve run out of milk!] It is a modern grocery store with an old fashion flair, where you know the staff and are greeted by name. In this computerized age that is priceless!”

“Eddie’s is so great - they make any sandwich, especially the Big Nick.”
-Nick “Big Nick” Sjostrom
“We order from Eddie’s every day. Their staff is friendly, and they’re always happy to deliver.” -Lindsey
“You can’t spell sandwich without Eddie’s!” -Devin Murphy
“When I’m looking for heritage, heirloom, estate bottled, free range, cage free olive oil- I can find it with help from Jerry or any staff and at Eddies on St. Paul St. A legendary manager - Jerry is handsome and his wife, D, beautiful, and you can go in just to look at them. But seriously - these folk perform all kinds of extra services - hold papers, pass messages, perform community service, free boxes-and I say all this as a customer for 30 + years. Jerry has oysters, he has capers. I may go in 3 times on one day, and I go in every day. And I don’t even live in Chuck Village.”

“As an employee of the Greater Homewood Community Corporation, I find myself out searching for lunch every day. There are a few choices of markets or fast food places, but my favorite destination is Eddies. It’s the perfect place to take a pleasant walk to – neither too close nor too far from anywhere else in Charles Village. The selection of foods in the market always provides something satisfying for my lunch. Also, the deli is a great place to order a specialty sandwich – like the Italian Meatball sub on Thursdays – or a delicious side dish for any lunch. I HIGHLY recommend the red skin potato salad. Eddie’s has so successfully solved my lunchtime problems that I seldom go anywhere else.”
- Tyson Smith
“Eddie’s Market in Charles Village is one of the few places within walking distance from where I live and work that offers such a diverse selection of wonderful foods, including Baltimore specialties like Zeke’s coffee, Otterbein’s cookies, and pastries from Bonaparte Breads. The deli selection is incredible, with all kinds of homemade sides and sandwiches that are made from high-quality and healthy ingredients. Eddie’s Market staff are warm and knowledgeable and always make me feel welcome.”
